How to send follow-up texts people actually answer

A short, personal text after a quote or a visit often gets a reply when an email doesn’t. Here’s how to do it without being a pest.

VERIFIED ON 3 MIN READ

  1. 1

Only text people who said yes

If someone hasn’t agreed to get texts from you, don’t text them. It’s the law in most places and it’s good manners everywhere.

  2. 2

    Keep it under two lines

Name, what it’s about, one question. “Hi Dana, it’s Sam from the shop — still want Thursday for the install?”

  3. 3

Ask a question they can answer in one word

Yes, no, or a day of the week. The easier the reply, the more replies you get.

  4. 4

Read every draft before it goes

Treat each text as a draft until you approve it. A wrong name in a text is worse than no text.

  5. 5

    Stop after two

If two texts get no answer, stop. Make a note and move on.

HONEST CAVEATS

  • Carriers can filter messages that look like marketing. Personal, short texts are less likely to be filtered, but there’s no guarantee.
  • Without the text pipe connected, an approved text stays on the screen and is not delivered. Without consent on file, it’s held.
  • If someone asks you to stop, stop. This screen doesn’t read replies for you, so it’s on you not to draft another text to that number.
